Portugal will not cower in fear but go on the offensive against Spain in their highly anticipated last 16 clash in the 2010 World Cup finals when both countries meet on Tuesday in Cape Town. Portugal boss Carlos Queiroz promised that his side will not adopt the same harsh tackling approach as they did in the last game but instead bring the beautiful game to the fore against the European champions.
Queiroz has overseen a Portugal reign that has stressed the importance of the team defending as a unit which has led to little of the attractive football the current generation of Portuguese footballers have often flattered to provide. Instead 22 clean sheets in the last 26 matches has ensured that the Seleccao are becoming hard to beat, but harder to watch despite having talents like former World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo, although the coach was not about to apologise for such an attitude.
“We want to win this game from the very first minute,” Queiroz said. “We don’t know if the game will be 90 minutes or 120 minutes or penalties. All that counts is that we move forward and score.
“My idea in a game of this nature is that we must take some risks. Our passing must be decisive if we want to win. We must also defend well and attack well. But if my squad wants to stay in the World Cup they must always be on the attack.”
Portugal will have to keep an eye on their card count as seven players could be banned from the next game if they receive a further booking against Spain.
“We have seven players on yellow cards but I am not not worried. They will have to play openly for 90 minutes and give their all for us to progress,” Queiroz added.
“Our attitude will not take the cards into account. Our attitiude will be one of pragmatic realism. We must be aware of our rivals’ virtues and we must be one second ahead of them. We must think quicker and play quicker.
“It’s going to be extremely difficult for both teams. Our style of football though is somewhat similar and I believe it will be a quick game with a lot of creativity, a lot of great moves,” he said. “At this stage I expect a great, great show of football.”
Playmaker Deco should be facing a return to the starting lineup but striker Danny is set to miss out with injury. Duda could also be left on the sidelines with a similar problem as Portugal should otherwise have a clean bill of health.
