Spain finally warmed up to their task of becoming World Champions by beating Poland 6-0 in their last warmup friendly before heading to South Africa for the 2010 World Cup finals. Fernando Torres scored a goal after coming on as a substitute to mark his return from injury on a successful note.
The Liverpool striker has been missing for both club and country since having knee surgery at the end of April, but looked sharp after coming on in the 66th minute. There was an injury scare with Andres Iniesta going off with a thigh problem but team officials said it was only for precautionary measures as the player was not fully fit.
All the best moves from Spain came by the feet of Iniesta as the Barcelona midfielder set the European champions on their way with two goals inside the first 15 minutes. David Villa scored the first after 12 minutes while David Silva notched the second just three minutes later as Spain cruised into the half time break with no further changes to the scoreline.
The second half continued in the same fashion as Spain continued to pile on the pressure on the hapless Poland. Xabi Alonso, Cesc Fabregas, Torres and Pedro scored the other goals as coach Vicente Del Bosque would have been satisfied with his players’ performance after the disappointing win in their previous game.
Spanish fans turned up in droves at Murcia’s La Condomina Stadium and were treated to an attacking feast by their heroes which had been missing for the past few matches, with Del Bosque warning his players not to be overconfident, reminding them of their failure in the Confederations Cup last summer.
He did not have to worry too much as even substitutes like Jesus Navas came on to pose much threat with his pace and penetrating runs. The young winger almost added a seventh Spain goal late in the game before being denied by Poland goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak.
Del Bosque said that Poland were chosen as their opponents for their similarity to their Group rivals Switzerland in South Africa. After this result, the Swiss will have plenty to worry about as both teams approach the opening clash.
