Slovakia are hoping to get their World Cup warm up underway against Cameroon after not having played a game since March when they lost to Norway in a friendly. The Slovakians boast one of the best defences in international football with Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel one of their standout players, but the team often does not back that up with enough goals.
In our preview, Cameroon will be expecting to bounce back from their disappointing 0-0 draw with Georgia earlier on Tuesday with fans hoping for a better showing from the Indomitable Lions. Coach Paul Le Guen hopes to field most of his first choice lineup against Slovakia before making his final decision on the 23 man squad to travel to South Africa.
Slovakia’s Marek Hamsik will be fielded as the Napoli midfielder hopes to bring his club goalscoring form to the national side. The player has top scored for his club in Serie A this season and his lung bursting runs from midfield will be a key for the country if they hope to excel in South Africa.
Cameroon will be banking their own hopes in the tournament on veteran striker Samuel Eto’o. Fresh from winning the Treble with Inter Milan after lifting the Scudetto, Coppa Italia and Champions League trophies, Eto’o should provide fresh impetus for a side that impressed during the World Cup qualifiers but have been limp ever since.
Draw on the cards
So who will win, or what would be the most likely result? Based on form, it would be sensible to to back the draw with Cameroon still struggling not only for goals, but also for form. Eto’o may be back but with little supply, the Inter striker could be a lone figure upfront. Slovakia will be rusty and have suffered from a total lack of form recently, although with the finals approaching, expect players to play for their place in the squad, especially in defence.
