Portugal beat Mozambique 3-0 earlier today at the Bidvest Stadium in South Africa to record their second win in 2010 World Cup finals warmups to head into the tournament with improving confidence. Hugo Almeida scored twice in the second half to help his team put their minds off the loss of Nani who was ruled out of the finals just hours earlier due to a collarbone injury.
Danny scored the other goal when he put Portugal on the way to victory with an early goal in the second half.
Portugal tasted life after Nani without his replacement Ruben Amorim having met his team mates by the time the game went underway as they went on an attacking rampage against Mozambique. They could have scored many more had they managed to get more of their 24 total shots during the match on target. In the end, scoring thrice from nine of their goal bound targets would still be considered clinical.
Raul Meireles took Nani’s place on the left at the start of the game as Cristiano Ronaldo was given a rest before coming on in the second half. Chelsea midfielder Deco was played on the right by coach Carlos Queiroz and Portugal struggled with such a formation at the start.
The match headed for a goalless draw after the first half before Portugal emerged for the second half with greater intent. Deco finally found space to pick out Danny to score the side’s first goal in the 52nd minute.
Danny could have hogged the limelight but missed two gilt-edged chances to put Portugal further ahead. But he stayed on the pitch and played a part in the second goal when he passed to Almeida who made no mistake in the 75th minute.
Almeida scored again in the 83rd minute after beating the goalkeeper with little effort.
