Mexico vs Uruguay Live Online: Aguirre Refuses To Play For Draw

By Angel on Tuesday, 22nd June 2010

Mexico boss Javier Aguirre has denied suggestions that they will play out a draw with Uruguay in a World Cup 2010 finals online live Group A match that would put both teams into the last 16 regardless of the result in the other game between France and South Africa.

Both Mexico and Uruguay have four points each and if both share the points on Tuesday, they would finish ahead of Les Bleus and the host nation as the latter two only have one point each going into their last group fixtures.

However, with Mexico trailing Uruguay on goal difference, a draw would also leave the Central Americans in second place in Group A and a likely meeting with Argentina in the last 16. Mexico coach Aguirre maintained that that prospect will ensure that he instruct his players to go out for a win – even if it could leave them open to a defeat that could see them suffer the heartbreak of elimination.

“Tomorrow we’re going to try and win,” Aguirre said. “We can be first, second, third or even fourth in the group. The law of the Mexican side is to win.

“If as a consequence of what happens on the pitch there’s a draw or a defeat and we both qualify with no major goal differences, then we’ll both be happy. But I can guarantee that the Mexican side is going to go out there to try and win.

“My players are very relaxed and know they can be either first or second in the group. They know they have to be fully focussed because we still haven’t achieved anything, so we have no reason to feel happy.

“Mathematically we still don’t have our ticket to the next round and tomorrow we have to try and take those three points, so that we can achieve our aims for the first round.”

Prediction: Whatever Aguirre said, his last remark is probably the most insightful as he claimed that mathematically Mexico have yet to secure their place in the next round. That would be guaranteed with a draw. It is difficult to see both teams taking risks to win as it could open the back door for a team from the other group game. All the pre-match statements are to give FIFA and the public an illusion of fair play. Take the draw for the game at -120.
