Germany may miss top scorer Miroslav Klose from their starting lineup against Uruguay in the 2010 World Cup finals third place playoff between the two countries. The Bayern Munich striker is struggling with a back injury that could now rule him out of the last game he would have to surpass Ronaldo’s existing all-time World Cup scoring record of 15 goals.
Klose currently has 14 World Cup goals to his name after netting four in the tournament in South Africa to add to his 6 goals from previous editions. The German striker failed to score in the semi final and could now suffer a double heartbreak as the injury is thought to be serious enough to see him end his international involvement at the highest level.
Germany assistant coach Hansi Flick revealed that Klose had picked up the injury against Spain and does not have enough time to rest prior to the third place playoff against the South Americans. The Bayern bench warmer is already 32 years old and this is certainly his last time to play in a World Cup with his country.
“Klose has problems with his back. He was hurt in an aerial duel, and we are hoping that he will be okay for the match.” Flick said.
There are also other injury concerns for the youthful German national side with midfielder Sami Khedira and captain Philipp Lahm both nursing knocks picked up in the last four clash. Lahm is likely to return for the last game for the Germans while Khedira – himself a replacement for former captain Michael Ballack who had to pull out due to injury – is rated doubtful.
