Argentina have responded to Germany’s claims of the South Americans indulging in unsporting behaviour before their quarterfinal clash in the 2010 World Cup finals with coach Diego Maradona responding, saying that their opponents are getting nervous and should show some respect.

Germany vice-captain Bastian Schweinsteiger had suggested in a press conference on Wednesday that they expected Argentina players to be diving and asking for the referee to book the Germans, and slammed fans of the South American nation as ungracious in defeat and unruly in behaviour.

In a TV interview with Fox Sports, Maradona insisted that his team would stick to their own attacking style and claimed that Germany were starting to get nervous about playing them in a revenge tie after the South Americans were eliminated from the 2006 World Cup by the same opponents on penalties.

In a direct response to Schweinsteiger’s accusations, the Argentina boss then turned to the TV camera and said in an imitation German accent: “What’s the matter Schweinsteiger? Are you nervous?”

“It doesn’t worry me what he says about penalties and that we don’t know how to lose. It doesn’t interest us. A different game is played every match and this is going to be different because we are coming out to attack them and play in their faces. This is what has made them nervous.” added Maradona.

Argentina defender Martin Demichelis, who plays for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, also said earlier: “I have been in Germany for seven years. They know me and they know I won’t change. But it does seem they don’t have a lot of respect for us.

“I am not paying much attention to it, but maybe they should show us some respect.”
