England vs Algeria: Carragher Says Fabio Capello Will Face No Pressure

By Angel on Wednesday, 16th June 2010

England defender Jamie Carragher claims that manager Fabio Capello will not buckle under the growing pressure from media and fans back home that the Italian currently faces ahead of England’s crucial World Cup 2010 Group C game against Algeria on Friday, after the Three Lions could only draw 1-1 with USA in their opening game.

Capello has been criticised for picking goalkeeper Robert Green to start against the Americans after the West Ham keeper made a howler to allow USA to equalise after England had gone into an early lead. David James was later reported to be incensed with the Italian’s decision, believing that his injury should not have ruled him out from starting, and is apparently no longer on talking terms with several team officials after the snub.

Liverpool defender Carragher has swept all the concerns under the rug and insists that the former AC Milan and Real Madrid boss has seen it all in his career to know how to deal with the situation comfortably, which would inevitably run off on the players.

“He is a very experienced manager,” Carragher said on Liverpool’s official club website.

“We always think England is big pressure, but managing AC Milan and Real Madrid is also big pressure on a daily basis.

“He has dealt with that and been successful.

“There was always going to come a point where he was going to be under pressure.

“That is part of being a manager. It can’t always be rosy but I’m sure he will have no problem.

“Then you look at his record, what he has done in his career, what he has done for now with England, qualifying etc. That is why there is faith in him.

“His record as a manager is pretty unblemished.

“That gives you belief for the tournament.”

Carragher will be hoping to get a chance to start against Algeria after it was revealed that Ledley King – himself a replacement for Rio Ferdinand in England’s centre pairing with John Terry – is likely to be ruled out for the rest of the tournament in South Africa after suffering a torn hamstring against the USA.
