Chile striker Humberto Suazo is racing against time to be fit for his country’s Group H opener against Honduras on Wednesday as the striker faces a late fitness test to determine if he can play a part.
The Chilean star, who scored ten goals for his country during the CONMEBOL qualifiers, suffered a hamstring injury against Israel last month in a friendly and has been trying to recover in time for the Honduras match while Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa tries to come up with alternative plans for the team without their chief striker.
Bielsa is doubtful that one of his main players will recover in time to start and did not sound convinced that he would be able to pick Suazo for use on Wednesday.
“We still have one training session which will take place in a short while,” Bielsa said on Tuesday. “I haven’t yet decided on my starting line-up.
“Suazo has been coming along over the last few days and he’s been training in the same way as his team-mates. Nevertheless, physically, he’s still feeling the effect of the rest he’s had to take ever since the Sunday on which he injured himself.
“He has been able to train over the past three days and he has been able to train fully, 100%. Now, if you’re asking me is he back in the same shape as he was before his injury, then he’s not in the same shape. But if you’re asking me if he’s healthy, yes he is healthy in the sense that he can take on the same tasks as the other players.”
