Chile will not sit back and defend against Brazil in the all-South American last 16 tie in the 2010 World Cup finals on Monday. Despite a rash of suspensions plaguing the team and having lost their last seven meetings with their South American rivals, Chile are putting on a brave front and Jean Beausejour claims that his side will play against Brasil the only way they know – attack.
“I expect an open match,” Beausejour said. “It’s likely that we won’t change a millimetre from what we have been doing, regardless of our rival. And with their history and tradition, Brazil will also try to attack.”
Fellow midfielder Arturo Vidal added to the Chileans’ insistence that while they have plenty of respect for the South American giants, they will not show any fear.
“We will respect Brazil, but we will play our own game,” Vidal added. “We will pressure and attack from all sides.”
Chile will miss three key players in defenders Gary Medel and Waldo Ponce while midfielder Marco Estrada will also sit out. But boss Marcelo Bielsa can continue to count on the exciting attacking talents of Mark Gonzalez and Alexis Sanchez, while hoping that talisman Humberto Suazo can finally find his goalscoring boots if selected.
Brazil will not be fazed by the Chileans’ strong words, but despite having beaten Monday night’s opponents both home and away in the qualifiers, coach Dunga remained cautious and humble in his assessment of the match-up: “Now we get to the stage where the 90 minutes will be decisive, mistakes are not allowed or you will be going home. Chile has been improving, it has a team with good players and will fight very hard to keep advancing.”
Captain Gilberto Silva added that the team will have to retain their pragmatic approach and not take unnecessary risks trying to smother their opponents with their natural samba flair: “We will have to play with intelligence. We can’t go after the win at all costs. We will need to be careful with their counterattacking, they know how to play and will try to attack too.”
Brazil may have several stalwarts missing from their starting lineup, with Felipe Melo set to sit out due to an ankle injury, while Julio Baptista may not be available for selection after a knee problem picked up in the previous game. Elano will remain on the sidelines, but Kaka – hailed as the closest player in the current squad to what is widely expected of a Brazilian player – will return from suspension with Robinho also set to be restored to the first eleven after being rested previously.
