Sampdoria will open their new Serie A season with a new coach as they welcome Lazio to their season opener. Domenico di Carlo has joined to replace Luigi Delneri who left for Juventus in the summer and the new manager has urged fans to fill the stadium and cheer the team on despite recent controversy over the new ID card for Italian football fans.
Sampdoria head into the clash after an early exit from the Champions League following their 3-2 midweek defeat to Werder Bremen, ending their hopes of making it to the group stages of the competition.
The result meant that Sampdoria will still enjoy Europa League football as they went into the draw for the second tier tournament but Di Carlo has made it clear his players will continue to improve and focus on success at home.
“Despite the loss, against Werder I saw the Samp team that I like,” said Di Carlo. “I saw the team that played a great campaign last season, with solid performances and character and with two champions like Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini providing the inspiration.
“We now must give continuity to our play and improve.”
Samp will be hoping to repeat last year’s formidable start to the season which saw them win five of their opening six league games. However, the home fans have reason to be wary for Samp have not won an opening league game at the Luigi Ferraris stadium since 1997.
