Inter Milan will open their season in the Italian Super Cup with another clash against AS Roma as both clubs renew a growing rivalry. New Inter boss Rafael Benitez is already looking forward to his piece of silverware but has to continue fending off comparisons between him and former Nerazzurri boss Jose Mourinho.
Benitez also revealed that his players are in the right mental state and physical condition to continue their winning streak from last season when the club won an unprecedented Triple with the Serie A Scudetto, Coppa Italia trophy and Champions League title.
“We’re happy to play against Roma tomorrow and we’re working well. It’s always difficult to start a new season after a World Cup because players come back late, but we have worked well during the summer,” Benitez told the club’s official website.
“It’s obvious that we have to think one game at a time, and then think about the next one and win as much as we can.”
Benitez paid tribute to Roma who have pushed Inter in several of the previous Serie A and Coppa Italia campaigns.
“They are a strong team with a good coach and quality players. It’s a final, so it will be difficult,” Benitez added.
“We played well against Juve and Milan in the TIM Trophy and we’re looking to see a similar team tomorrow. The first thing I want to do is win this trophy, then the next one. But the players are key. They have won and they want to keep winning.”
The former Liverpool boss also maintained that he was calm ahead of his competitive debut for the club while insisting that should the team go on to win the Italian Super Cup, it would be their achievement and not Mourinho’s.
“I’m a bit old, I have a bit too much experience to be nervous,” Benitez said with a wry smile.
“It’s a final tomorrow but for me it’s just a normal match and it’s right like this, so there’s no particular reason to be nervous.”
“If we win the cup it’s the club and the players who win it. This club has won a lot in five years and it’s the players who are most important.”
