Inter Milan have confirmed that they have appointed Rafael Benitez as their new manager after club president Massimo Moratti made the announcement himself. The Spaniard will be presented at an official press conference that the Italian champions will make known by Wednesday.
Benitez left Liverpool by mutual consent early last week after six years in charge of the Anfield giants. Immediately after his departure, the Spaniard became the favourite to take over Inter’s former coach Jose Mourinho as Moratti made public his intention to consider the former Champions League winner as his new man in charge of his club.
Moratti then revealed that negotiations had gone well and that an agreement had been reached between his sporting director Marco Branca and Benitez over telephone during the weekend. It appears that both parties have now come to an agreement on Tuesday night and the former Valencia coach will now take over the “Special One” at the San Siro.
“We have reached a deal with Benitez,” Moratti told Sky Sport 24 Italia. “Tomorrow we’ll announce the date and time of the presentation press conference.
“We finalised the last details, which were not all that important anyway. All we are waiting for is his signature and it’s all done.”
Benitez will have a hard act to follow at Inter as Mourinho led the club to their fifth successive Scudetto Serie A title, as well as the Coppa Italia and Champions League trophy last month to complete a unique Treble in the club’s history.
Mourinho had also previously advised Moratti not to hire the Spaniard – cautioning against his abilities, while both men battled constantly in the Premier League when the Portuguese was still in charge of Chelsea.
Benitez also left Liverpool under a cloud of uncertainty and disappointment after finishing last season only in seventh place – a year after he almost led the club to their first Premier League title in history when finishing second to Manchester United.
