Inter Milan will make the trip to Bologna to open the defence of their Serie A title with new manager Rafael Benitez having his first taste of Italian football. The former Liverpool boss has brought a 20-man squad to Bologna although Brazilian defender Maicon will miss out with a knee injury.
“Maicon has a knee problem and won’t be available,” Benitez told the club’s official website. “(Davide) Santon has done two or three very good training sessions and I will have to talk to him and see if he feels ready.”
The Spaniard is expecting a tough start to his tenure of the Italian and European champions and the optimistic mood has been dampened after Inter failed to win the European Super Cup last Friday, losing 2-0 to Europa League champions Atletico Madrid in Monaco.
“The first match of the season is always difficult,” Benitez added. “Bologna are at home, so our mentality will be important. I am very pleased with this morning’s training session. I saw a prepared squad and I’m expecting our players to show all their qualities tomorrow.
“We didn’t win the European Super Cup and it’s not nice to lose, but I’m certain that my players will react. If we look at Inter’s starts to the championship in the last three years you can see that the team has never started very well. Losing last Friday could turn out to be an stimulus for everybody: to do well and get back to winning. To do this, though, it’s not the tactical formation that will make a difference. To win, our mentality and quality are indispensable.
“I have always said that we want to do things well, but we are only at the start of our work and if we all analyse the situation calmly we can see how the defeat in Monte Carlo is the sum of several factors: players back from the World Cup, new coach leading the team, international friendlies, Italian Super Cup, and awards ceremonies. All put together, these situations stopped us from training calmly, but now we are ready to improve. Milito? He will improve too. He’s an intelligent player who knows when he plays well and when he doesn’t, and he also knows why he didn’t play well the other day.”
