AS Roma will open their new Serie A season with a clash against Cesena on Saturday with the capital side once again looked upon as the favourites to push Inter Milan all the way for the title. Roma boss Claudio Ranieri has told his players to fulfill those expectations by storming out of the gate with strong intent, despite the club still mired in financial problems and lacking enough new signings to bolster the squad this summer.

“We have to start strong against Cesena. They will be compact, fast and we have to win. Let’s start with three points,” Ranieri said in the pre-match conference.

“We need to approach the game with humility. We have a responsibility as we are Roma. We have done good things, but we need to close games, and take advantage when we play well.

“I have faith that we can repeat the season we had last year.”

With Adriano being the only notable arrival at the club this summer and joining the club in distinctly overweight condition, many are starting to write off the club’s chances of maintaining their recent second place finishes behind Inter in previous seasons.

However, Ranieri is not about to allow such criticism to stop his charges from making their strongest possible challenge this season.

“For obvious reasons we were not able to spend like the others. But, we have determination to do well and we will show this,” Ranieri added.
