Bundesliga club Stuttgart are seeking discussions with in-demand midfielder Sami Khedira over his future after sporting director Fredi Bobic revealed that they are unwilling to take any risks over the player’s contract situation.
Khedira is being tracked by Real Madrid after impressive performances for Germany during the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa. The midfielder is into his last year of a current contract with Stuttgart and will be able to walk away as a free agent next summer if no renewal is made.
Bobic admitted that the club are keen to discuss a new deal with their rising star but have yet to come to any agreement with Khedira. However, the official also made it clear that should the player refuse to sign a new contract, the club will not hesitate to consider any offers for him or it would “not be good for business”.
“Khedira’s contract is due to expire in a year, meaning he will be allowed to leave Stuttgart on a free transfer. That would not be good for a business like Stuttgart,” revealed Bobic during a press conference.
“We would like to extend Sami Khedira’s contract, but it is up to him. We will hold talks in the coming days.”
Bobic also insisted that should they move Khedira on, the money made from his transfer would be used to strengthen the team in other areas and that the club do not deem it necessary to sign a replacement for the midfielder with backups available currently in the squad.
“If we do sell Khedira, the income will be invested in new players, but not on a like-for-like replacement. We don’t need that – we have three players in our squad who can play in his position. Certainly there will be some more players arriving though.” Bobic said.
