Gonzalo Higuain has made it clear that he will stay at Real Madrid next season and intends to see out his career at the club as long as Jose Mourinho remains as coach. The Argentinian striker is on the verge of signing a new contract with Real and is looking forward to a successful spell under Mourinho in terms of silverware.
Manchester City and a host of other major European clubs were heavily linked with the prolific goalscorer this summer after it was revealed that Real and Higuain were facing an impasse in contract renewal negotiations. However, the deadlock appears to have been broken and the striker is set to ink a new six-year deal with the club.
The Argentinian international claimed that he had a “comfortable” time playing under the recently sacked Manuel Pellegrini but is now turning his focus on a more successful future at the Bernabeu, praising new boss Mourinho for being someone who “guarantees” success.
“Without doubt, he is a coach who guarantees success,” Higuain said. “He is a winner and he will have the same success he has had at other clubs with Madrid.
“It is unfortunate that Pellegrini left because I felt comfortable playing for him. He is a good person.
“The truth is that I am very happy with what is happening at the club. I am staying in Madrid.”
Higuain’s change of heart will be another massive blow to City’s ambitions as coach Roberto Mancini was keen to bring the free-scoring striker to Eastlands in a front pairing with Carlos Tevez. Mancini has already admitted that the club are unlikely to capture other priority transfer targets David Silva and Maicon, and with Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko slipping from their grip, Higuain’s decision could mean a summer of second best for City.
