Cristiano Ronaldo has targeted a quick return with Real Madrid for their Champions League tie against Ajax Amsterdam next Wednesday.
The Portuguese star was knocked out of action after suffering an ankle injury in los Blancos’ season opener against Mallorca and is unlikely to be fit in time for Real’s next La Liga fixture against Osasuna this weekend.
The 25-year-old was also much missed by Portugal during their Euro 2012 qualifiers against Cyprus and Norway over the past week. The Seleccao shockingly drew 4-4 with Cyprus in their captain’s absence while the subsequent fixture against Norway on Tuesday resulted in a defeat, putting their qualification for the tournament finals in jeopardy after another poor start – similar to the one they had during the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Ronaldo has confirmed that he is feeling much better after a period of rest and hopes to return soon to help the team.
“I just think about helping the team and believe I can be ready for the match against Ajax. I feel better and we will see how it evolves,” Ronaldo told reporters.
“I’m still not perfect but almost at 100 per cent. I will return as soon as possible and we’ll see in a couple of days and if I can rejoin the group.”
When quizzed for his opinions on the future of Portugal boss Carlos Queiroz who could be on his way out to be replaced by Euro 2008 winning Spanish coach Luis Aragones, Ronaldo chose not to answer.
“I’d prefer to pass by this subject. I’m not the right person to talk about it,” Ronaldo remarked.
Queiroz is currently serving a six month ban for interfering with drug administrators while Ronaldo had recently clashed with his former Manchester United assistant boss after Portugual crashed out of the summer World Cup finals in South Africa.
