Greece will hope to restore pride and belief in the national team as they face fellow World Cup finalists Serbia, after a disastrous campaign in South Africa. Both countries flattered to deceive most times but the recent announcement by Greece striker Ioannis Amanatidis over his retirement from international football has led to confusion over how Greek football is being run.
Amanatidis criticised the selection policy of the national team after failing to make the squad for the friendly and subsequently decided to call it a day, making himself unavailable for future international games involving Greece.
Fernando Santos replaced Otto Rehhagel as the new Greece manager and overlooked the 28-year-old for his first assignment. Amanatidis also missed out on the World Cup finals due to injury but it appears this was the last straw for the ambitious striker.
“Many players have not played for their clubs and used the national team to promote themselves,” Amanatidis said.
“It’s already clear nine of the ten players who will be on the field, no matter how they perform for their club.
“If I divulge everything I know, then it would be like a bomb being dropped.”
Amanatidis turns out for Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt and made his international bow in 2002. The striker has only scored three goals in 35 games for the national team.
