England star Wayne Rooney is expected to travel with the rest of the Three Lions squad to Switzerland for the crucial Euro 2012 qualifier on Tuesday despite facing fresh allegations about his private life.
There were some doubts earlier on Sunday over the striker’s availability for Fabio Capello but Rooney trained with the rest of the team in the morning. After his sterling performance against Bulgaria on Friday, the England boss is expected to select the United star again as the Three Lions aim to make it two wins from the opening double header of their qualifying campaign.
It was revealed earlier in the day that Rooney had been alleged to have been with a prostitute while wife Coleen was pregnant.
The revelations will come at a bad time for the striker as he continues to try to rebound from poor form that has plagued him since the end of last season which culminated in a disastrous World Cup campaign for both player and England in South Africa.
Questions will be asked if the latest lurid allegations linked to Rooney could have contributed to his stuttering form on the pitch. Before scoring a penalty against West Ham last week, the former Everton starlet had not scored a competitive goal for both club and country since March.
The part Rooney played in all four of England’s goals against Bulgaria in a 4-0 win had given Capello and England fans something to smile about as it hinted of a return to form sooner rather than later of the team’s most important player.
Yet Capello will now have to deal with another scandal to hit his England players – the third in the last year after Ashley Cole and John Terry’s own private problems – on top of continued media scrutiny on the team and his management after the failed World Cup campaign.
