European and World champions Spain will begin the defence of their title in the opening Euro 2012 qualifier against Liechtenstein with manager Vicente Del Bosque preferring to remain humble over his side’s chances. The former Real Madrid boss – who guided Spain to their first ever World Cup title this summer – claimed that their Group I rivals will not make things easy for them and that his players will need to be on their guard.
Spain will also be attempting to stretch their record unbeaten run in European Championship games to 17 with at least another draw but they should be claiming all three points with ease. It would also be their fifth successive win in the competition if they succeed.
Liechtenstein have decided to look towards the future with boss Hans-Peter Zaugg bringing in several new faces in place of experienced internationals. Players such as Thomas Beck, Christoph Biedermann, Benjamin Fischer and Wolfgang Kieber have been dropped while Peter Jehle, Franz Burgmeier and Ronny Büchel are included along with Under-21 players David Hasler and Benjamin Büchel.
“It is good that we have hungry players,” Zaugg said.
As usual, Del Bosque have a wealth of talent at his disposal and the likes of Fernando Torres, Pepe Reina and Andres Iniesta are all available once more, despite Liverpool requesting that the world champions do not risk their star striker who had just returned recently from injury and is still not fully match fit.
Spain captain Carles Puyol has had to withdraw due to injury and Bruno Soriano and Ignacio Monreal have both been drafted in with the latter replacing the Barcelona stalwart. Both players featured in last month’s 1-1 draw in a friendly with Mexico.
“We have to pick the best players, but we must look to the future as well as EURO 2012,” said Del Bosque. “We must be optimistic and think that most of the players in this squad will be in this championship. I don’t want to shut the door on anyone, and every player who hasn’t been picked must maintain hope of being selected. Success in the World Cup won’t be harmful for the future; on the contrary, as world champions we must do our best every in game. Liechtenstein are not going to make things easy.”
