Iceland will host Norway in both countries’ opening Euro 2012 qualifier on Friday with each side set to miss their star players. The home side did not pick Stoke City new signing Eidur Gudjohnsen while Aston Villa hitman John Carew will also have to sit out due to a knee injury.
The Norwegians will be praying that the lack of striker Carew upfront will not compromise their attacking options too much as the once formidable Europeans look to kickstart their Group H campaign with an impressive win against a traditional rival. Many of Iceland’s first settlers migrated from Norway and both teams have drawn each other four times in succession in recent meetings.
Gudjohnsen was not selected by Iceland boss Olafur Johannesson as the striker had not been training with Monaco prior to his recent summer move back to the Premier League. Iceland goalkeeper Arni Gautur Arason is struggling with injuries and Johannesson has selected Ingvar Thor Kale as a possible backup in case the former is unable to play.
Striker Carew had been out in Norway’s recent friendly against France last month and will have to miss out once again with a knee problem. The Villa striker could still make a return in Norway’s next qualifier against Portugal next Tuesday but a team spokesman said: “This is a knee issue he’s been struggling with for quite some time, and it’s the same one that caused him to miss the game against France.”
