France will begin their new era under Laurent Blanc against Belarus in the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with Les Bleus hoping to put behind them the World Cup scandal this summer. From a low of finishing bottom of their group in South Africa, the French will be looking to a brighter and younger force in the coming years.
Blanc has made sweeping changes to Les Bleus, slightly in part due to the various suspensions of a handful of stars like Patrice Evra, Yoann Gourcuff and Franck Ribery, and partly due to his desire to impose his own authority and imprint on the team. There could be debuts for four uncapped players in Kevin Gameiro, Cédric Carrasso, Mamadou Sakho and Benoît Trémoulinas although the former Bordeaux boss is likely to keep faith to tried and test quality in his first competitive game in charge.
“To have a young team is a good thing, but it’s not enough to be competitive at the highest level,” Blanc said. “We tried to come up with a mixture of talented youngsters and more experienced players who can guide them.”
There is again no place for Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra after he withdrew due to injury – on the back of an unfortunate pullout from the World Cup squad as well after the medical team discovered a heart problem – but midfielder Yohan Cabaye and defender Anthony Reveillere have been given places in the squad although the latter has since been replaced by Blaise Matuidi due to injury.
“Lassana can play as a midfielder, as a right-back too, so his absence is a huge blow.” Blanc said.
Bernd Stange has omitted midfielders Timofei Kalachev and Leonid Kovel as well as FC Naftan Novopolotsk defender Dmitri Verkhovtsov due to the trio lacking match fitness following recent injuries. The German coach is setting his sights high for the forthcoming campaign, saying: “We face difficult opponents and it will be very hard for us. However, our aim is to qualify to the finals. Our minimum task is to reach the play-offs. We have to try to take our chance.”
