England will have to face Bulgaria in their opening Euro 2012 qualifier on Friday at Wembley without several key first team players. The likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard, Peter Crouch and Rio Ferdinand have all had to be out due to various injuries while manager Fabio Capello continues to grapple with his goalkeeping situation as backup Scott Carson had to pull out due to a family bereavement.
After what was described as a disastrous World Cup 2010 finals campaign in South Africa, England will be looking to bounce back in style and seek redemption, with striker Wayne Rooney in particular hoping to prove his doubters wrong with a goalscoring and winning display.
Yet it will be in defence which Capello will be most concerned about as Terry is out with a hamstring injury while Ferdinand is still on his way back from knee injury suffered prior to the World Cup finals. The Three Lions may have to throw Everton’s Phil Jagielka into the fray with Matthew Upson or Michael Dawson as their central defence partnership while Lampard will be missed in the middle of midfield.
“Bulgaria are a dangerous team,” Capello said. “I watched three games that they played: two before the World Cup and the last against Russia. They lost 1-0 but they played very well. It will be a tough game that we will play here at Wembley.”
Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart will also make his competitive debut as the youngster continues to close his grip on the number one shirt for England. Hart has continued where he left off from last season by securing the starting spot in City’s team of international stars and now hopes to become the permanent England number one.
Stanimir Stoilov has selected a squad almost exclusively comprising overseas players, with Veselin Minev and Ivelin Popov the only members of the 21-man party to play their football in Bulgaria.
