Fresh from landing at least a £20 million jackpot after qualifying for the Champions League group stages, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to spend it all on Aston Villa winger Ashley Young before the close of the transfer window next Tuesday.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp believes that he can finally convince Young to leave Aston Villa after the Midlands giants crashed out of the Europa League in midweek for the second season running. With Martin O’Neill having also walked out on the club pre-season with no new manager in sight and midfielder James Milner sold to Manchester City, Redknapp will have an easier job now telling Young his future lies away from Villa Park.
Redknapp is desperate to add to his squad before the end of the transfer window as the Spurs boss wants new players to inject freshness into a team that is now set for a sterner test with both Premier League and Champions League commitments this season.
Fans have already been growing impatient over the lack of summer investment in the playing squad with only Brazilian midfielder Sandro and former Arsenal defender William Gallas the only players to have arrived at White Hart Lane. Spurs are now hoping to land Young as their biggest signing of the summer.
The 25-year-old is a versatile winger who can play on either flank while having also been played in the hole supporting a main striker.
Spurs will have to be set for some tough dealing with a Villa hierarchy that has already shown its willingness to dig their heels in and get the most out of their prized assets in previous examples with James Milner and Gareth Barry. Villa owner Randy Lerner may also be wary about letting go of more of the club’s best players and trying to attract a top manager to the vacant hot seat.
Meanwhile, Spurs could also offer striker Robbie Keane in a player plus cash swap for Young to sweeten the deal for Villa.
