Moratti knows that Mourinho already has his heart set on the Real Madrid vacancy and is starting to look at a list of suitable candidates in earnest.
Moratti had previously stated that Hodgson would be welcomed back at the club anytime and the Craven Cottage boss had a second stint in charge of the Serie A club in 1999 after the club president turned to him during a time of need. It was recognised that Hodgson was brought back to stabilise a club that appeared to be in crisis at the time.
The Mirror reported that Hodgson’s tenure at Fulham has greatly impressed Moratti and other Inter officials. The 62-year-old led a team devoid of major stars to consistent Premier League stability while a fantastic Europa League campaign ending in a trip to the final captured the imagination of many football romantics.
The progress shown by the humble Premier League club appears to have convinced Moratti that Hodgson could be the man Inter needs to bring the team forward. The Italian club’s president revealed on Sunday that the incoming manager had to be a person capable of improving Inter beyond what Mourinho had already achieved during his stay.
Hodgson also enjoys good relations with the Inter president and several other officials. His first stint in Serie A from 1995 to 1997 was not unlike his time at Fulham. Hodgson led the club to seventh in his first season in charge before second season saw the club finish third in Serie A and qualifying for the UEFA Cup final in 1997. Inter lost on penalties in the previous two-legged format.
