Former Manchester United defender Gerard Pique says that Cesc Fabregas will find it “impossible” to resist a return to Barcelona and that he would want to join his former Barcelona team mates to form a team of “envy to the world” unlike at Arsenal.
The Barcelona defender feels that – like he did with Manchester United – the Gunners skipper will eventually follow his heart as he is a Barcelona fan at heart and would want a return instead of staying in London.
Fabregas has reportedly told Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger that he no longer wants to play for the club and wishes to return to his Catalan roots. The player spent his youth representing Barcelona before being taken to England on the cheap by Wenger.
However the potential move has hit an impasse over the valuation of the midfielder between the two clubs. Arsenal are demanding £80 million for the player they want to build a side around but Barcelona believe they should not pay above £30 million for a player who was originally theirs. The Catalan giants have always felt that the Gunners had taken the Spanish international without moral regard to the game and do not want to be fleeced for a second time.
Pique spoke of his own situation during his time at United and how he believes that Fabregas is going through the exact same dilemma as he contemplates leaving the club that helped made him into a superstar he is today.
“I had a similar situation at Manchester United,” said Pique in the Daily Mirror. “I am a Barcelona fan, I wanted to return and I am convinced that Cesc will come here.
“I am enjoying the best years of my life and my career here and I think that’s why Cesc wants to come. He would fit in well. I found it impossible to resist a return to Barcelona. If he comes along with David Villa then we will have a team the envy of the world.”
While Pique returned to Barcelona and won the Treble in his first season back, Fabregas continued to come up empty handed with the Gunners. The defender is certain that the lack of silverware in the midfielder’s cabinet would convince him to follow in in the footsteps of David Villa.
Arsenal are said to be adamant in their desire not to sell the player, with Arsene Wenger keen to have the Spanish meet his asking price before opening any negotiations. Club chairman Peter Hill-Wood said: “We are not remotely interested in selling him.”
