With the Premier League season fast approaching, Stoke City will play their next pre-season friendly against Derby County on the back of a crushing 6-0 win over non-league Newcastle Town last week. Turkish midfielder Tuncay will be hoping that he did enough in the last game – scoring a hat trick – to warrant a starting spot in the lineup to continue staking his claim for a place in the first team lineup for the new campaign.
The humble Premier League mid-table side was impressive in their previous outing with Tuncay racking up his three goals in the second half, while team mates Robert Huth, Ricardo Fuller and Michael Tonge led the team to what was a stroll in the park from the outset.
Stoke boss Tony Pulis will be well aware that Derby County will provide a stiffer test than Newcastle Town, and could start a strong lineup for the second game running. But the floodgates did not open until the introduction of Tuncay in the second half against Newcastle Town and Pulis may be tempted to start the temperamental midfielder from the outset this time. Having spent most of last season on the substitutes bench as Pulis went for the pragmatic, the Turkish midfielder is a fan favourite and was clearly frustrated with the lack of opportunities.
The focus will again be on building up the players’ fitness levels before Stoke’s Premier League opener against Wolves three weeks from now.
