‘Those who are looking for Gerard Houllier’s head, who are asking that he be fired have the right to feel that way,’ Krulak said. ‘They buy the tickets and they can say what they want.’
Even Houllier’s subsequent club statement to explain away his faux pas failed to gather a positive response from Krulak, who responded: ‘I know his comments and actions on Monday evening seem at odds with his statement.
‘Nothing can be done to retract what has happened. But there is not one single person at Villa Park who doesn’t understand where we are right now. We have a good portion of the season ahead of us. We must not throw the towel in.’
Lerner, along with chief executive Paul Faulkner, discussed the current position over lunch with Houllier and his assistant, Gary McAllister.
There was an acceptance from the club’s manager that he had been caught up in the emotion of a return to the stadium where he once suffered a heart problem and officials were keen to draw a line under the situation.
There was no suggestion or hint from Lerner that Houllier himself was under pressure as they chatted about the club’s slump. Indeed, transfer targets were mulled over and Villa’s boss gave Lerner further updates on his progress as the American billionaire looked for answers as to why there has been such a rapid deterioration in a squad that finished sixth last season.
