Southampton will open their npower League One campaign against Plymouth Argyle with the heavy burden of expectations on their shoulders after having been made the overwhelming favourites to win the division. However, Saints boss Alan Pardew accepted that the tag could be justified only if the team goes on to win the games required.
Pardew still believes that a hard work ethic would be the best way to answer the critics who will be out in droves should they stumble anytime along the way.
“I think every man and his dog have made us favourites and we have to accept that,” Pardew told the club’s official website.
“It’s opinions. That doesn’t mean to say it’s correct, it’s your own personal view. My personal view is that I have some outstanding players, and a great team behind me in terms of staff, and great support from the fans, so we in a very fortunate position. Ultimately, whether you are favourites or the best player in the league, you have to put in the work. You don’t get anything unless you put in your maximum and work hard – we have all that to do before we get any sort of success.
“In our own minds we just have to focus on what is important and that is winning the next game. I won’t let the team focus on any more than that. I said when I arrived that I wanted to build a winning strategy so that the Club only accepts a win, whoever we draw in the cup, whether it be Chelsea or Man United, we need to expect to win – that’s the only reason why we pay wages.”
Pardew will face up to a familiar face at the other end with Peter Reid having taken over the mantle at Plymouth Argyle. The former Manchester City boss took the opportunity to turn the pressure on his opening day opponents by claiming that the bookmakers “rarely get it wrong” throughout the course of a season.
