Championship club Middlesbrough have parted with Gordon Strachan as manager on mutual consent after the Scot presided over a string of poor results this season.
Strachan also agreed to tear up his contract and turn down any compensation offers after failing to gather any returns from a heavy investment on his playing squad in the summer.
The pre-season favourites for promotion in the Championship this season, Boro have lost six of their opening 11 games and Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Leeds left them still languishing just two points above the relegation zone.
“Middlesbrough Football Club has confirmed that manager Gordon Strachan has today left the club by mutual consent,” a statement on the club’s official website confirmed.
“The change has been made with Boro in a disappointing 20th position, 11 games into the Championship season.”
Strachan joined Middlesbrough after enjoying a wildly successful time in charge of Celtic. However, the Scot has had a terrible record with the Championship club, winning only 13 of his 46 matches in charge since taking over from Gareth Southgate last October.
Strachan also spent huge sums of money on several high profile signings this summer, including former Rangers hitman Kris Boyd. Several of these signings were from the Scottish Premier League but most of them have flopped spectacularly, unable to adjust to English football.
“Gordon is a man of great integrity. He has torn up his contract and walked away without compensation because he felt it was in the best interests of this football club,” club chairman Steve Gibson revealed.
“There are very few managers who have ever done that but that is the mark of the man.
“He feels he has given it everything he has got here but it hasn’t worked out and he has taken full responsibility for that.
“He knew that first team results weren’t anything like as good as we had hoped they would be and he agreed that the change had to be made.
“He was quite tortured. It’s been a torrid time and I hope he gets back to enjoying life.”
First team coach Steve Agnew will take charge of the club on a temporary basis, as Gibson admitted he will not be rushed into an appointment, with Alan Curbishley and Tony Mowbray among those likely to be linked with the vacancy.
“We are now working on a shortlist of potential candidates as Gordon’s successor,” he noted.
“It is crucial we put the right man in charge so I will not rush into a decision.”
