Swansea City will face Millwall in a crucial Friday night League Championship clash with manager Brendan Rodgers reminding his players that they must be consistent in order to remain in his lineup.
Rodgers was referring particularly to Darren Pratley after leaving the midfielder out of last weekend’s win over Ipswich due to a dip in form. Pratley has also refused to discuss a new deal with the club and the Swansea boss was forthright in how he will deal with the matter.
“You know me by now,” Rodgers said. “I will always judge players on performance level and obviously I pick the team accordingly. My opinion was, and I spoke to Darren about it, that his performance level has dipped.
“He is a good guy and he took it well and I respect him for that. There were no issues and no problems. I was open and honest. I told him I felt I needed to make a change and that’s what we did. He took it like the man that he is. He is in a difficult situation in terms of his contract this year, but he is a great professional and, when he came on at Ipswich, he made a good contribution.”
Pratley could still find himself out of the reckoning against the Lions after his replacement, Andrea Orlandi, played well at Portman Road while Mark Gower and Joe Allen are likely to continue on as well.
“There’s no-one guaranteed a shirt here,” Rodgers added. “I think it’s very important that when players are in the side they are performing, because to get out of this league you need consistency.
“You need as many players as possible being as consistent as they can and, if you fall below a level, there are others who can come in. Look at Kemy Agustien. He’s a good, good player who is champing at the bit, but the players in front of him at the moment are playing well. It’s good for us that everyone has to perform to stay in the team.”
