“It’s a shame (missing the game against Sheffield United), it would have been a great game and a good opportunity to get three points but we’ll just have to get on with it and train hard this week,” he said.
“I looked out for it at the start of the season and was hoping to be fit by now, which thankfully I am – and obviously I would have loved to go back to the stadium that I’ve played at many times but I’ll have to wait a bit longer.”
The 28-year-old, born in Newcastle, isn’t letting the recent cold snap affect his work rate – and is hoping to repeat his solid displays earlier this season against the likes of Barnsley and Ipswich Town.
“I’m just trying to concentrate on training and keeping myself fit so when the chance comes I’m ready for it.
“I have to keep myself available for when I’m needed again. The squad is in good shape at the moment, we have brought in Mikele who’s a great lad and a great addition to the squad. He’s really strong; he’s great at breaking up play so I’m really happy that he’s here with us.”
