Portsmouth will continue a horrible season so far with a second round Carling Cup tie against Crystal Palace with manager Steve Cotterill demanding that the remaining players in a small squad start pulling their weight. The Blues endured their worst display of the season against Preston and Cotterill is fast losing patience with the players he has at his disposal.
“For several reasons we were not at the races on Saturday. There were more than one or two who didn’t perform.” Cotterill told the club’s official website.
“If you’ve only got three or four players playing well, you’ll lose. If it’s five or six, you’ll probably draw. If it’s seven or eight nine, you’ll win, and if it’s all 11, you’ll win handsomely. So we’ve got to make sure we have more than five or six players playing well in every single game. But we haven’ t got to those levels yet.
“So we need to start putting a few things right with the 11 we’ve got.”
Portsmouth’s opponents for the night are Crystal Palace who narrowly avoided relegation from the Championship last season after finishing ahead of Sheffield Wednesday in the final game of last season. The Eagles have also emerged from administration this summer and things are looking brighter for the club after they signed former Dutch international Edgar Davids, Pablo Counago and Jonathan Obika from Ipswich and Spurs to bolster the squad.
“Crystal Palace have had a big change around. They’ve got a bit of pace about them down the flanks and through the middle.” Cotterill added.
“It’s a side’s bench you look at – that tells you how strong they are. And Crystal Palace’s bench is decent.”
