Middlesbrough are keen to replace departed Gordon Strachan with Celtic flop Tony Mowbray as their new manager, chairman Steve Gibson has revealed.
“I’ve known Tony since he was a boy almost,” Gibson told Sky Sports News.
“He’s an obvious candidate. We’ll speak to a lot of people and we’ll make a decision.”
Boro and Strachan went their separate ways on Monday after poor results this season had the club down in 20th place in the Championship, despite being tagged as overwhelming pre-season favourites for promotion.
Coincidentally, Mowbray replaced Strachan in Celtic but then presided over a nightmarish season before getting the sack, with current boss Neil Lennon taking over as a caretaker initially.
Gibson did admit that the club will consider all applications received first before making a decision.
“It won’t be rushed. There’s no shoo-in. We’ll take our time,” he added.
“There’s a lot of people out there who want to be football managers. It’s too early. We start with a blank sheet of paper and we’ll get on with that.â€
