Leicester City will be in a better mood as they prepare for the visit of Doncaster Rovers on Saturday in the Championship with news that striker Matt Fryatt has decided to stay with the club rather than leave on loan.
Fryatt has been struggling to remain in the lineup under City boss Sven Goran Eriksson but the striker has informed the Swede that he intends to fight for his place and rediscover last season’s form when he finished as the club’s top goalscorer.
Fryatt has also had to contend with new arrivals Roman Bednar and Darius Vassell which has seen him limited to just six starts this season with the Foxes.
Eriksson said: “There were clubs interested. But he said ‘I want to stay and fight’ and I am more than happy about that.”
Eriksson added: “If it will be something different in January I don’t know.
“Maybe he hasn’t shown his best so far but I know that last season he did very well. He’s young; he is a good talent and if he wants to stay and fight then sooner or later he will play.”
Foxes coach Derek Fazackerley said that Fryatt, who scored 13 goals last season, has become frustrated at his lack of first-team opportunities.
And Eriksson said he would not stand in the forward’s way if he wants to leave.
“It’s the same with him as for the other players; if he is not happy to stay then he shouldn’t stay,” Eriksson said.
“I don’t want to see unhappy faces in the morning. Then, it’s better to leave; it’s better for the players and it’s better for the club.”
