Leeds were First Division champions under Don Revie but were constantly heavily beaten by Burnley and one of the first results was at Turf Moor in October 1968. Then, the Clarets thrashed the dominant Leeds 5-1 on the day as it was again in March 1974 when they travelled to Elland Road and ccame out 4-1 winners. In that same match, Leeds showed their ugly side when Norman Hunter smashed Casper leading to the latter never recovering fully from the injury.

“The two games against Leeds that stick out in my mind were the 4-1 win at Elland Road in 73/74 and the 5-1 win at Turf Moor,” said Martin Dobson, now Burnley’s director of youth development.

“We had some great games against them in the late 60s and the early 70s and we really learned a lot about the team in those games.

“Leeds were an excellent team and we had a very young side in 1968 with people like myself, Colin Blant and Colin Waldron.

“But the manager Harry Potts coached us to watch out for how they played.

“He said that we had our work cut out, that it would be a really difficult game for us because they would probably win the league.

“But we were in the middle of eight wins on the bounce. We won 5-1 and in the end it was an easy game.

“I remember us coming back into the dressing room after the game and thinking ‘wow’.”
