Hull City will travel to Brentford for their Carling Cup second round tie with the threat of an upset hanging in the air. However, defender Liam Cooper is confident that the Tigers can continue with their recent improvements in defence to keep another clean sheet and move into the next round of the competition.
Cooper – who was involved in his first start of the season – was part of the backline that kept out the Watford forwards on Saturday and also gave the Tigers their second consecutive clean sheet at home. They will now have to repeat that effort in an away game against lower league opposition.
“I didn’t think Watford caused us too many problems,” Cooper told the club’s official website.
“It felt fairly comfortable at the back and I thought we were a little bit better going forward.
“It was a tough game and quite physically demanding. We didn’t win, but it was a good performance.”
Cooper is hoping his display would have done enough to convince the gaffer to also include him in the starting lineup against Brentford, with a trip to Doncaster Rovers coming up in the Championship the following weekend.
“It’s a case of trying to stay in the team now. I want to play every week but I can only do that by performing. The manager threw me in on Saturday and said ‘grasp your chance’. I tried my hardest and hopefully I’ll be in the team for Tuesday and Saturday.” Cooper added.
“Playing again on Tuesday would be good and would also be beneficial for my fitness.”
