Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic may not recover in time for his side’s FA Cup final on Saturday. The Serbian suffered a knee injury recently and has yet to train properly with coach Carlo Ancelotti penciling in Portuguese Paulo Ferreira as a replacement should the PFA Team of the Year defender fail to prove his fitness in time.
It would be a big blow to the defender after a season in which he established himself in the Blues’ first team. Ivanovic had to wait eight months before making his first full debut with the club under former coach Felipe Scolari.
John Terry has declared himself fully fit and ready to lead his side out at Wembley. The club skipper suffered an injury scare on Wednesday after initial fears that he had a broken foot proved unfounded. Terry, who left the training ground with his foot in a protective cast, cleared medical scans and trained on Friday without any problems.
“I’m fine and looking forward to the game,” Terry said.
The England defender also assured England fans that he will be ready for the World Cup 2010 finals although some have questioned if he may pushing his body too much.
Apart from Didier Drogba’s hernia problem that continues to require painkilling injections prior to the final, Ancelotti will have no other concerns other than Michael Essien, John Obi Mikel, Jose Bosingwa and Ricardo Carvalho all missing for the game through long term injuries.
Jamie O’Hara is set to defy doctors’ orders to sit out the game by taking painkilling injections to combat the double stress fracture in his back. The midfielder – on loan from Tottenham Hotspur – has been nursing the injury for some time but is determined not to suffer another career heartbreak after missing out on Spurs’ 2008 Carling Cup final.
Portsmouth coach Avram Grant is set to have defender Tal Ben-Haim fit for the final, while striker Aruna Dindane has long been cleared by mother club Lens to turn out for the relegated Premier League side. Nadir Belhadj and Richard Hughes are questionable due to hamstring problems.
Chelsea are bidding to win their first League and Cup double on Saturday while Pompey could make headlines again if they succeed in upsetting the Premier League champions despite being relegated.
