Didier Drogba proved once and for all he owns Wembley after scoring the winner in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Portsmouth in the FA Cup final. The win also gave the Blues their first Double in club history and completed a remarkable first season for coach Carlo Ancelotti.
In a final that appeared to have all the makings of an upset in the first half, the game turned on a penalty miss by Portsmouth’s Kevin Prince Boateng. The midfielder was distracted by Chelsea skipper John Terry’s gamesmanship and placed his shot directly at Petr Cech who saved with his legs. Less than a minute later, Chelsea were 1-0 up.
Didier Drogba received the ball at the other end and was fouled on the edge of the Pompey penalty area. The Ivory Coast international stepped up to take the free kick himself and sidefooted a powerful shot past the south coast club’s goalkeeper David James.
It was the sixth goal Drogba had scored at Wembley and cemented his reputation as a striker for the big occasion. The Premier League Golden Boot winner also scored in the semi final at the same venue.
There was still time for Frank Lampard to miss a penalty three minutes from time. It did not matter in the end as Chelsea saw out the remaining minutes as a deflated Portsmouth could not match their first half efforts.
It did not appear to be the Blues’ day in the first half after they hit the woodwork several times. Drogba, Terry, Solomon Kalou, and Nicolas Anelka all had shots rebounding off the goal frame while James proved a formidable barrier.
At the other end, Portsmouth threatened sporadically with their fast breaks and Aruna Dindane proved a handful with his direct running at the Chelsea defence. Boateng also saw a shot redirected by Frederic Piquionne that brought an excellent reflex save from Cech.
The Chelsea fans ended the first half in nervous mood as they wondered if luck was on Pompey’s side. The second half started with Pompey pressing hard and a great upset appeared to be on the card after Aruna Dindane won a penalty when Belletti fouled him in the area.
Unfortunately, the relegated Premier League club failed to make their best chance count and while Chelsea celebrated a historic league and cup Double, Portsmouth are now left to wonder what the future holds for them.
