PSV Eindhoven will host Sparta Rotterdam in the Dutch Cup third round on Wednesday with manager Fred Rutten opting to show the opponents plenty of respect ahead of the game. The PSV boss insists that Sparta are a tough side and will pose his team plenty of problems with a brave display.
While there has been some controversy surrounding the incident involving Jonathan Reis and the subsequent measures the club has taken against him, Rutten preferred to focus on the Dutch Cup tie against Sparta, revealing that he is demanding that PSV reach the next round.
“We are keen to win trophies and we take our KNVB Cup campaign seriously.” Rutten said.
PSV will be without Stanislav Manolev, who is recovering from a groin injury, and Jeremain Lens, who is suspended. Rutten may also have to do without the services of the suspended Marcus Berg.
Rutten also pointed out the tactical smarts of opposite number Jan Everse who will take charge of Sparta.
“Their coach Jan Everse came close to a stunning Cup win when he was in charge at FC Zwolle. His team produced a courageous performance and I expect him to draw up a similar bold game plan for Wednesday,” said Rutten. “Most of the Sparta first-team regulars have gained experience by playing at top level. They’ve produced inconsistent results so far this season, but Cup ties are so different from the usual league games.”
