Manchester United will not only be aiming to finish top in C against Valencia but also secure a rare record by becoming the first team in Champions League history to complete the group stage without conceding a goal.
United have prospered in Europe despite a defensive fallibility domestically as they have shut out their group rivals in all five games so far. Ironically, manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been forced to field some of his younger players in the competition and they have exceeded his expectations.
Both teams have already secured their place in the knockout stage but Valencia will be determined to grab an unlikely win in England and finish as group winners. However, United need only a draw to achieve the same.
Ferguson is likely to stick to playing a sprinkling of his youngsters with Premier League showdowns against Arsenal and Chelsea in the next two weeks.
“We have some fantastic young players at the back,” 31-year-old Wes Brown, whose place in defence has sometimes been taken by the new crop said. “You could play a good back five with some of them in there; Ben Amos in goal, Rafael at right back, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling in the centre and Fabio at left back. That is the next generation.”
United were not in action over the weekend ahead of the midweek European clash due to a frozen pitch while Valencia lost yet again to one of Spain’s big two as they crashed 2-0 at Real Madrid to leave their early season La Liga challenge biting the dust.
Starting lineups:
Manchester United: 1-Edwin van der Sar; 21-Rafael, 12-Chris Smalling, 15-Nemanja Vidic, 20-Fabio; 8-Anderson, 11-Ryan Giggs, 24-Darren Fletcher, 26-Gabriel Obertan, 14-Javier Hernandez, 33-Bebe.
