In a reverse of the 1999 final, Bayern Munich scored in injury time to beat Manchester United 2-1 in their quarterfinal first leg. Ivan Olic, who had missed a few chances earlier, finally scored the decisive goal that gives the Bundesliga club a slender lead going into the second leg at Old Trafford in a week’s time.
Manchester United would have felt a little hard done by as the winner was scored when they were down to ten men theoretically. Talismanic goalscorer Wayne Rooney was lying injured in his own half when Bayern swept forward for their winning goal.
But the Red Devils could only have themselves to blame as defender Patrice Evra inexplicably lost the ball to Olic who then went on to score with a calm finish. Rooney then had the United medical staff swiftly attend to him while the Germans celebrated.
The match started strongly in United’s favour as Rooney scored after just 2 minutes from the first whistle. Bayern defender Martin Demichelis conceded a free kick near the corner flag before failing to get to the ball when Nani swept it in. The ball deflected off Mark van Bommel to an unmarked Rooney in the penalty area, who tapped it home to give United a crucial away goal.
Bayern spent some time trying to get themselves together and within that time, Manchester United threatened their goal ominously. Such was the pace and passing of their game that they came close with Paul Scholes, Nani and Rooney all wasting gilt edged chances.
The German team then slowly came back into the contest and could have been level by the break. Franck Ribery started to apply his authority on the game and created chances for Hamit Altintop, himself and Olic but the side went into the half time break still trailing.
The equaliser eventually came in the second half after another careless free kick, this time conceded by United veteran defender Gary Neville after a handball on the edge of the penalty area. Rooney then played a part in the goal as he deflected Ribery’s shot past Edwin van der Saar.
A draw would have been a fair result before Rooney’s fateful night ended in injury fears for the second leg and Olic’s dramatic injury time winner.
