“To start with, we need a few wins to get out of danger,” he said. “And then we can talk about what we can achieve in what is a very tight Bundesliga.
“Certainly things have not gone very well in the Bundesliga (so far), but what starts badly does not necessarily end badly.
“I am feeling at least five years younger. That is because we train hard under Felix Magath and I am able to play more than I did for Real recently.
“A new team is developing here and, after a poor start, we are now playing a lot better.”
That is precisely what Frankfurt coach Michael Skibbe fears. He saw their midweek performance and recognises that their poor start to the season is now behind them.
“We are warned,” he said. “Schalke are better than their current league position (16th) suggests.”
Nevertheless, he is plotting the Royal Blues’ latest downfall to make it four consecutive wins for his side – something they have not managed in 11 years.
“Every win is important to me and I am not too interested in statistics, but it would certainly be nice to win in a sold-out Waldstadion tomorrow,” he said.
Skibbe will not be changing the team which beat Kaiserslautern last Sunday while Magath should also stick with the 11 players which kept them on course for a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
