Bayern Munich will head into their pre-season friendly against FC Cologne on the back of manager Louis van Gaal refuting rumours that the club were on the verge of making a player plus cash swap for Wolfsburg star Edin Dzeko, with Mario Gomez and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk heading in the opposite direction.
The Dutchman claimed that the Bundesliga champions may not dip into the transfer market this summer and the Bosnian striker did not fit into their “overall concept”. Van Gaal did admit that he has too many strikers in the squad and may consider selling anyone who was unhappy in the team.
“We will not buy anyone. Perhaps this is the first year in the history of Bayern Munich that this is so,” said Van Gaal.
“I do not think Dzeko fits into our overall concept, because we already have four strikers.
“The players have told me that they feel comfortable here and that I am a good coach. But if one wants to leave, then it is better if he goes.”
Van Gaal apparently prefers a smaller squad size of around 22 players, which could lead to speculation that up to three players from the current squad of 25 senior players could face the chop this summer.
