Newcastle Jets will face Brisbane Roar in the A League on Sunday at the EnergyAustralia Stadium with the hosts glad to have Chinese signing Zhang Shuo available for selection. The Jets are saddled with a slew of key injuries and will be hoping that Zhang can bring his scoring tough to a side that will not have Sean Rooney, Nikolai Topor Stanley, Jobe Wheelhouse and Ruben Zadkovich amongst its list of players fit to play.
It will also be Zhang’s debut in the A League and first appearance since jetting into Newcastle three weeks ago but was unavailable to play immediately due to a hamstring injury. The Chinese striker has since returned to training and has shown no side effects from the problem.
With the Jets having only netted once in a dire start to the season so far, manager Branko Culina will be glad to have Zhang fit to start. Statistically, Newcastle have only two players in their squad – Tarek Elrich and Labinot Haliti – who have managed to score against Brisbane Roar in the past and Culina will be hoping that Zhang can improve the team in that area.
Trying to beat a confident Brisbane side that has so far enjoyed a roaring start to the season with two wins and a draw from three games so far will not be easy, but the Jets are confident that a win is just around the corner and two points from three games could still improve considerably after today. They will need a sharper edge though against an opponent who have kept clean sheets in all three fixtures.
