Adelaide United will face Perth Glory in the A League on Friday at the Hindmarsh Stadium with young striker Mathew Leckie available for selection despite having been away from the squad training with the Socceroos side for the AFC Under 19 Championships.
Both Leckie and goalkeeper Mark Birighitti will be allowed to participate in the game by the FFA before flying back out again to join the rest of their national team mates.
The availability of Adelaide’s top scorer will be a huge boost to United boss Rini Coolen: “We worked it out a couple of days ago (how we would line up without Leckie) but then we heard the news that he was available, so that was the reason we didn’t have to change something in the last training session.
“I’m real happy. You want to play with the whole team that you played with in the last couple of weeks, and Leckie was in it and an important player for us. At the start of the week we thought we couldn’t play with him, but something changed in the last couple of days…so he can play tomorrow.
“He is really fresh and fit, and he’s really looking forward to playing the game tomorrow. He is ready and he is focused.”
United have remained unbeaten so far while Perth Glory have slipped up in the last two games but the game is still rightly a top of the table clash despite the visitors now in third place.
And Coolen will not be underestimating their opponents who boast star names Robbie Fowler, Mile Sterjovski and Jacob Burns, with the former Liverpool striker still a potent force in the game at this level.
“Of course it’s important to know how they’re going to play, you have to be careful and respect the way your opponent is going to play, but we have to play our own game at home, it doesn’t matter against whom or against what,” Coolen added.
“They want to win points…but we also need that and we prefer to keep them here, and hopefully we win the game and for the people here tomorrow, they’re going to see a really good game, and as I said last week, let the best team win.”
